This past Thursday, March 25, at 6:30 pm marked the first regathering of the Clokey Park Neighborhood Association since prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. We gathered in Prairie Avenue Christian Church's fellowship hall, spaced six feet apart in the large room, with 4 neighbors (and 1 excused by last minute events) meeting after a year-long absence. Decatur Police Officers attended, and we began to plan the return of our regular litter pick ups, our Sunday afternoon walks (when the weather permits), and the return of our Clokey Park Neighbor newsletter.
Our regular meetings will now be held on fourth Thursdays at 6:30 pm rather than Third Thursdays.
The Adopt-A-Street Clean ups will be on Third Saturdays at 10 am, starting April through September.
We will resume the quarterly newsletter.
We will resume our Sunday evening walks at 4 pm, probably in May.
Thanks to the attendance of Elder Marty Watkins, we will network and connect with another congregation in our neighborhood: Church of God Temple #3, the former East Park Baptist Church.
News was also shared of the upcoming work of the Decatur Block by Block program, with additional projects being solicited by this group. All neighbors are encouraged to reach them by phone at (217) 454-8432 or email at ellen.hearn@decaturblockbyblock.org.
As work continues in the Johns Hill/Southside Improvement Association neighborhood and the completion (and hopeful opening!) of Splash Cove at Nelson Park, I am optimistic that more people will discover our neighborhood as a good place to live, work, and play.
Our neighborhood is strengthened by its neighbors participating! Come to one of our upcoming events and see the power of joining others in making Clokey Park a better place for everyone!
